The rule

You may have learned early which thoughts were sayable and which needed editing, that silence is safety, and that what you don't say can't be used against you. You got so quick at the edit that you stopped noticing you were doing it.

Traditionally echoed in Èṣù, the Yoruba messenger between people and the divine and keeper of the crossroads, a figure missionaries long misread as a devil, in Thoth, the Egyptian god of writing and speech, and in Harpocrates, the Greco-Egyptian god of silence, himself born of a misreading when the Greeks took the child Horus's finger at his lips as a call for secrecy.
