The rule

You may have learned that this kind of grief is dramatic, or hopeless, or too big to be a real feeling, something for scientists and activists to manage rather than something an ordinary person is allowed to sit with.

Traditionally echoed in Papatūānuku and Ranginui of Māori tradition, the earth mother and sky father pushed apart by their own children, whose grief for each other has never ended: his tears still fall as rain and her sighs still rise as mist. Echoed too in Gaia, the primordial Greek earth goddess and mother of everything living.
