The Essence
You may have learned that you are the roles you hold, parent, partner, provider, professional, and that what you're worth gets measured by what you got done. It might arrive in a gap between roles, a train journey, a waiting room, a day you do nothing of note, when you catch yourself, for a moment, not needing to justify it. You are not the sum of today's output, or of anyone's need for you. Underneath all of it is a person who existed before any of it and will still be there if all of it changed tomorrow.
Traditionally echoed in Atman in Vedantic thought, the self that exists beneath every role, and in the Self, Jung's own archetype of wholeness, which he traced through mandala imagery recurring in cultures that had no contact with each other, and in the divine spark of some Gnostic traditions, the light of Sophia, divine Wisdom, carried down into every human being and waiting to be remembered.
