What an economy could measure instead
A healthier economy would judge its success by how well people and places thrive rather than by how much gets produced. Doughnut Economics offers one picture of it, meeting everyone’s needs within the limits of the living world, and the wellbeing economy movement is already testing versions of it in places like Wales, Scotland and New Zealand.
Inside an economy like that, rest, softness and having enough would stop being indulgences to apologise for and become part of the design, and the question of what the work is for would be asked at the start rather than once someone has burned out. I write about this in What is the economy for?
