The rules
What you may have learned
No. 12 · What you reach forThe Wounded HealerYou may have learned that whatever you reach for to cope is weakness, best kept hidden if you want to be taken seriously. Each time you catch yourself reaching, there's a moment to ask what hurts instead of what's wrong with you. Most days you'll miss it. Catching it once is the start. People reach for relief because ordinary conditions aren't providing what they need. The real question was never why the habit. It's why the pain.→No. 37 · The body changing over timeThe VesselYou may have learned that the body you have now should look and perform like the one you had before, and that change is decline.→No. 40 · Being the strong one, and needing othersThe GuardianYou may have learned that someone has to be the strong one and that someone is you, that needing people is weakness, and that even when help is offered outright, the safer response is to wave it off. It might start with one thing, handed over and not checked on, or a bag you let someone carry without the reflex to even it out. Humans are the most interdependent species alive, and the people who ask for the least are usually the ones who need it most. Being strong for everyone isn't a personality. It's a role you were given, and you're allowed to put it down.→No. 16 · Rest and doing nothingThe Still OneYou may have learned that rest has to be earned with exhaustion first, that value comes from output, and that doing nothing is laziness.→
